Creating a vmdk image of my original TiVo hard drive to present to jmfs?

I usually use the jmfs ISO inside a VM under either VMware Fusion on a Mac or VMware Workstation on a PC to image larger hard drives to put into my TiVo Premiere. I usually have the two hard drives hooked up via SATA/USB adapters and sitting on my desk.

My original TiVo 320GB disk is over 4 years old, and although it works fine for now I know it will eventually fail due to a mechanical issue. Is there any way to create an image of the disk in vmdk format that I can keep somewhere else? That way I can mount that instead of searching for my original HD.

tivo series 4 power supply current capacity

does anyone know how many amps the power supply for the series 4 can supply on both the 5 volt and 12 volt wires?

Can I move lifetime to another box with the "change service number" link on tivo.com

Will the "change service number" link in my account on tivo.com allow me to move the lifetime service to another (identical model) tivo box?

I'm considering socketing the prom on my tivoHD, and it would greatly steady my soldering hand if a lifetime service wasn't on the line at the time.

Upgrading Series 3 HDD to 2Tb

So I have done this before, but each time it feels like I have no idea what I am doing. My 1Tb hdd went bad (S03 error that I couldnt kickstart 57) so I picked up a 2Tb WD20EURS.

I am going to try to copy over the shows from the old drive using WINMFS and hooking up both drives. Is there anything I need to remember to do other than run MFS copy? and hope the shows transfer?

Going from 1Tb to 2Tb do I need to expand the space or do any fancy WDDIDDLE or anything. All of the technical jargon gets me a bit nervous since I really have no concept of all of the details of the tech. If the copy fails I have the original HDD that the machine came with that I can copy onto the new drive...again though...do I need to do anything fancy or just MFSCOPY...what about supersize and all the other options in the software.

Any help would be appreciated...again, this is not my first time...I have probably honestly done this 10 times...I have an awful memory for it since I only go through this once every few years for myself or helping out a friend.

Thanks

And Cheers to all the great helpers on the forums.

MFSLive v1.4 and NTFS problem

Having trouble with MFSLive boot CD version 1.4 and my NTFS Windows XP boot volume. According to the release notes, NTFS volumes are supported for r/w access now under the Linux kernel. However, the following command sequence doesn't work:

mkdir /win
mount -t ntfs -w /dev/hda1 /win
backup -f 9999 -6so tivo.bak /dev/hde

The last command gives the result:
tivo.bak: Permission denied

I've also tried using:
mount -t ntfs -w -o rw /dev/hda1 /win
with the same results.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a problem with MFSLive? Is there another MFS tools boot CD that supports NTFS for R/W??

Thanks!

Cheap Western Digital 2Tb green drive

Visted my local Staples today, picked up two 2tb Western Digital My Book Essential external drives for $71 each. According to what I can find online they have They have WD green 64mb cache drives in them, I believe the drive model is WD20EARS but I haven't torn mine apart yet as I'm using them for their intended purpose as external drives to do PC data backup.

$71 appears to good esp considering you are getting a USB 3.0 external drive interface, note that the shelf price was higher and it wasn't until they pulled the drive from the back room, brought to the cash register and scanned it did it ring up at $71. This might be a fluke as I can't find this listed on Staples website for this cheap. I wasn't using any discount card or anything, I was tempted to buy the 3tb external but 2tb was all I need right now.

Btw they also have 4tb drives but they may not have WD drives in them, the 3tb versions are reported to have WD drives.

Note, the external drive has WD encryption, it may need to be low level formatted before using in your Tivo esp if you use it externally first, per online reports it appears no one can access data after installing it in their normal desktop PC using SATA.

Premiere S4 Upgrade Problems

Trying and failing to upgrade my Premiere with a blank 2009 model WD10EARS. Successfully upgraded my HD S3 to 1T years ago.

CD booted jmfs - rev.104 gets to this point and fails. Tried four separate computers and multiple cabling configurations (sata, usb) and all fail at the same place within five minutes. Something basic wrong? All advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Possibilites of a Series3/TivoHD upgrade beyond 2TB?

Has anyone tried to upgrade a Series3/TivoHD past 2TB total capacity lately? Since one of the recent software updates allowed greater than 1TB partitions, making it conveniently possible to upgrade any of these units to 2TB, I've been wondering if any other limitations may have been removed as well, and in fact greater yet capacities may be possible.

When I find an eSATA enclosure, I am considering attempting a 4TB setup in a 2TB + 2TB configuration.

Clonezilla

Could you use clonezilla to clone drive then use MSFadd to expand it?

Premier drive upgrade with WINMFS

Just trying to verify that WINMFS will copy and expand an original premier drive onto a larger 1Tb drive without doing anything out of the ordinary.

old internal to an external?

I will be upgrading my premier XL to a 2t. I'm not to tech savy but want to keep my current recordings. Is there a way to keep the original hooked up as an external until i watch or re-record what i have, I've read some of the cloning posts but do not have a sata port on my home PC

Pre-emptive hard drive replacement?

I replaced the original hard drives in our 2 S3 OLED TiVo's (December 2006 and January 2007) in September 2008 with 2 Western Digital AV-GP WD10EVCS drives so they are about 5 1/2 years old now. I've been tempted to pre-emptively replace them with 2GB drives to try and head off possible failure with loss of shows (and with the side benefit of gaining more space). We've had good experience with hard drives in computers and TiVos. Our original S1 drives were still working after 6 1/2 years and 9 years respectively for example.

I was curious if anyone else had thought about replacing their drives as they started to get older to avoid a failure.

Dead Hard Drive

My Hard Drive totally crashed, no hope of recovering! Only TiVo I have...where can I get the .iso or TiVo software from to install on a new drive?

Upgrade twice (320G -> 1T -> 2T)

Hi,

I have a normal Premiere (746320) that I originally upgraded to 1TB. That drive is failing so I got a new 2TB drive. Is there any way to upgrade again without losing my recordings? I'm perfectly comfortable rearranging stuff with dd or editing a partition table with hex, so even if there's no automated way to do it I'd love pointers on structure that I could tweak myself.

[I think] I know JMFS adds a single MFS partition to the end of the drive, is it possible to expand that partition or add another MFS partition?

Thanks!

TIVO HD (TCD652160) Stock Hard-drive Upgrade Help

Hi guys and gals :)

I want to upgrade my TIVO HD (series 3) stock hard-drive to a maximum capacity internal hard-drive. I also want to preserve all of my season passes. The TIVO HD model number is TCD652160. I have Windows XP PC, but I do NOT have CD/DVD burner.

I have been reading this forum, but I am still lost regading the best approach in my situation.

2TB is the largest capacity internal hard-drive that is proven to work with TIVO HD correct?

Is 2TB WD20EURS hard-drive model still recommended?

I am also planning to buy a USB to SATA adapter, and I have a Torq screwdriver already.

Do I need to buy anything else?

What software should I use to upgrade the hard-drive?

Any advice is appreciated.

Need help with a drive & MFSlive

Im working on a what I thought was a bad drive in a Premiere, it is stuck at the powering up screen and couldn't kickstart 54 it to test the drive.

I have created a MFSlive boot cd, hooked up the drive out of the premeire and booted the live cd. I thought there was a text menu but I see that it's just a command line only.

Need help with basic MFS commands, what do I do to list the drive and at the least see if the drive is bad or not? The drive is recognized to the computer and I presume to MFS but I'm Linux dummy, I know enough to be dangerous and that's all! I saw the command line generator over at the MFSlive site but those are strictly operational guides to accomplish drive copy and expansion task, I need to first just get my feet wet with the command line without killing anything.

If possible I would like to back the drive up if it's accessible and copy the image to another drive as I have several around that should work.

Premier Logs

My premier started rebooting several times a day. I just pulled the drive (WD 20ears) and rad WD diagnostics with no errors. Now I want to look at the logs to see if I can see anything that might clue me to the problem.

Anyone know if tivopart works on a premier drive? I've got it hooked to my Debian video server but can't get the partition layout to work via tivopart but it's been so long that I'm probably doing it wrong.

The drive is SDF do wouldn't the command be tivopart /dev/sdf

Tivo upgrade with a hybrid ssd/HD drive?

With a few talking about using SSD drives in a Tivo, I got curious and started looking around and found the better idea might be the combo ssd HD drives. The Seagate model uses adaptive technology that caches the common used read only data on the ssd area while the rest exists on the standard HD area. The the drive it's self appears as a single drive and the adaptive algorithm is built-in to the drive which is transparent to the user/device.

Only thing I can see is faster reboot of your Tivo and possible better menu reaction, the other issue is that the drive in a standard PC requires several reboots to properly cache the common used data on the solid state area so it might require you to reboot your Tivo a few times after the drive is installed.

This might enhance the older TiVo's, anyone want to test this?

Dead TiVo HD (upgraded HD?)

I hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

In a nutshell, my main TiVo is a TiVo HD (series 3) that I upgraded myself right after buying it (5 years ago) with a 1TB hard drive.

This weekend it started rebooting over and over again. So to see if I could narrow down the cause, I opened it back up again (for the first time since I upgraded it) and put the original HD back in (that I'd saved just in case I'd need it). And luckily, the TiVo started working again, making me believe that the upgraded HD was what had failed.

Unfortunately, now I'm back down to the original 20 hour HD capacity (instead of 150), and I'm afraid I've lost everything I had saved.

I have no problem with buying another 1 TB drive and upgrading it. But if there's any way I can salvage what's on the old one, that'd be great.

I'm also concerned that I don't know any more which HD models I can/should buy, as the last thing I want to do is buy a drive and get it here and find I cannot use it.

Any suggestions/advice?

Upgrade Question on Hard Drives

Hey guys love the site and appreciate all the feedback you guys have given me over the years. I have a question. I'm about to get my hands on a new Premier Series 4 TiVo with 4 Tuners. It still has its original 320 GB hard drive in it. Will I be able to straight up swap it out with my WD10EADS 1 TB hard drive from my Series 3 TiVo that I have right now?? I'm trying to avoid having to use any software or Sata to USB cables. I'm not the most technical savvy on this stuff. I guess what I'm saying is will the Premier be able to work and function normally if I just take the normal hard drive out and put in this WD10EADS hard drive in it?

Thanks a lot guys for responding to my question.
