Tivo not recognizing added size of new HDD

$

I posted in this in the Help forum before I remembered about this one so please forgive the duplicate post.

I just upgraded my dad's stock drive in his Tivo HD to a 2TB WD Green drive. I used winmfs to copy the stock drive to the new drive which worked fine. However, the Tivo is only showing available capacity of 21 HD hours (the capacity of the stock drive). It was suggested that I missed the Supersize command in winmfs but I'm pretty sure I did that and I don't see how that would result in only seeing the drive as a 160 GB drive rather than a 2TB drive. Any ideas?

Upgraded HD in Tivo HD back in the S03 error loop. HELP!

Hi guys -

I purchased two Seagate ST3500414CS to replace the stock HDs in my Tivo HDs that were having S03 errors loading the lineup updates. One of the harddrives was DOA, but the other one seemed to work well for a week or so. Now two weeks later, the working one is back getting the S03 error.

Is the other Seagate probably bad as well? Or is there something else going on? We have our Tivos & TAs on outlet timers so they shutdown at night. Could that be contributing to the issues?

On another subject, are there other (more modern) 1 TB hard drives that I could try for the Tivo HD? Preferably something that is eligible for Amazon Prime?

Thanks in advance!

new kickstart codes for hard drive reset

I've noticed growing interest in resetting Tivo's due to suspected corruption on Roamio's.

There are some new-ish kickstart codes, that might be relevant. I couldn't find any discussion on these so assume
DANGER: this will likely ERASE your data.
Code:

"Kickstart code 50 - wipe db partition"
"Kickstart code 59 - Repeat Guided Setup"
"Kickstart code 67 - perform SQLite integrity check"
"Retailer Reset code - initiate factory reset"

Bad Premier XL drive -- thinking about upgrading to 2TB

Hello. :)

It looks like my premier XL drive has died. When it boots up it stays in the "starting up" screen and it doesn't go any further. I can't even get to the kickstart screen. So it looks like an HD issue so that's the path I'm going to pursue for the moment.

I'm thinking that if I have to replace the HD anyway, I might as well make it a 2TB drive. :)

From reading the forums, it looks like I need the following:

DvBARS
jmfs live cd
A tivo premier XL drive image (TCD748000)
A 2TB sata drive (probably something like a WD20EURX 2TB)
A USB 3.0 to SATA Dock

And then it looks like I should be able to do the following.

Install the factory image using DvBARS to the 2TB drive
Use jmfs to resize (and then supersize) the image to expand the 2TB partition
Replace the drive in my tivo and go through the setup again.

So a couple of questions.

What format is the backup in? Specific to DvrBARS? Or is it possible to use dd from the jmfs live cd?

Are there better alternatives to the WD AV-GP series of drives?

Anything else I'm missing?

I would do the 4TB image, but it looks like it requires two HD's....

Swapping drives in a Roamio

I swapped out a 1gb drive from Roamio Plus with a 3tb drive I had previously in a Roamio basic. Thought it went ok until I realized none of the recordings I had set were recording. By chance I went into the sys info screen and found that the TSN was missing??

When I did the swap it all worked until the last boot (box had to download a software update) but when it came up it told me there was hardware problem and I would need to reboot the Tivo. Do so and until now I thought I was ok until I found it wasn't recording anything.

I'm doing a clear an reset and see if that helps. Has anyone else seen this before?

I assume is ok to use 3TB in 652, just will only have 2TB available to record on, correct?

Suggestions for the best way to align partitions on advanced format drives?

$

Any ideas for the most efficient way to align a S3 image to 4K sectors on an advanced format drive?

The current image has 512 byte bootstrap partitions. This is what throws it out of alignment. I tried manually building the partition map, putting in 4.0K bootstrap partitions, and dd'ing each partition over. I have not yet expanded, and the unit will boot up, but if I force a connection, or connect the antenna cable, it will reboot. I've tried a kickstart 57, no luck there.

There was an old beta version of MFSLive back in the day that had an option to do something about the bootstrap partition sizes, I think, but I don't know if that old beta could handle a S3.

Welcome any suggestions, Thanks.

TiVo HD 2TB Upgrade

I have a 1TB internal HD and a 500GB external HD. I have a full backup of both drives using DvrBARS. Can I restore to a 2TB internal HD? Used WinMFS to upgrade. I need to keep all of my recordings.

Green Screen after harddrive upgrade

My TiVo HD was stuck in a reboot loop last week on the WD 1TB drive I installed five years ago. So I purchased a new WD20EURX 2TB drive. I only have Macs and 1 SATA drive enclosure. Today I backed up the 1tb drive with WinMFS to a file and then put my new drive into the enclosure. I restored from the backup and said "yes" when asked to expand the drive's space.

I put it into my TiVo and now I'm at the green "severe issue" screen. I don't remember getting this last time, but that was 5-years ago. I'm curious if there was an issue on the 1TB drive and because this was a restore from that, something needs to be corrected by the TiVo itself. Anyhow, if anyone can assist in any way, please do.

Here's my setup for reference:

TiVo HD
WD20EURX drive that I bought last week
I did not test intellipark because everything I've read says WD doesn't ship with that on anymore. Also, I couldn't get the tests to work in my setup.
New core i7 iMac running Mavericks
VMware with a Windows 7 install
WinMFS was used to back up the 1TB drive and then restore that to the new 2TB drive
I have the original TiVo drive available if needed, along with its image

Expand 3TB drive to 2TB (for use in HD)?

$

I am trying to press a 3TB drive into temporary service in a TivoHD until I can get my hands on a more suitable replacement. I realize the system won't recognize the full capacity of the drive, but I'm hoping to use as much of it as I can. I've got a backup of the original 160GB image I made with WinMFS that I'm using as my starting point.

However, I can't figure out a way to tell any of the tools I'm familiar with (WinMFS, MFSLive, jmfs) to create a larger partition at the end. I can limit the image to 1TB with WinMFS, or expand it all the way to 3TB, but don't know of any way to stop in the middle.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a tool or command option I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

The new Roamio, can you just throw in a bigger hard drive and not mess with Linux?

Can I just go and buy a 3TB (or larger) drive and replace the 500GB one in my Roamio Basic arriving wednesday and it just work without doing anything to the drive first? And if so is there a make and model of drive that works best with the Roamio Basic?

MFSLive Linux Boot CD constantly Reboots

I have booted to my MFSLive Linux Boot CD for Tivo Users. It gives me four options. After selecting Option 1 (MFSLive for Series 1, 2, and 3), it scrolls some data, then briefly lists my drive, and then reboots back to the MFS Live main menu. It is in a constant reboot cycle.

Can anyone help?

Upgrading TCD746320 to 2TB WD20EZRX Cannot Expand

$

Hi,

I was using JMFS v1.04 and following showthread.php?t=455968 for a TCD746320 using a WD20EZRX

The copy went well.

But expand gives: "Expand did not finish successfully"

I upgraded connected to SATA on a motherboard, but now have the new disk on a USB adapter. The USB adapter has worked for upgrading an earlier S2 Tivo to 1TB.

hdparm -i /dev/sdb gives "HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument"

hdparm -N /dev/sdb gives "HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid exchange

fdisk -l gives:
Disk /dev/sdb: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table

And I don't want to put it into my Tivo at this point...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

(I tried to solve my own problem, and read a lot of pages on this forum, but I'm still confused).

652 w/ 2TB drive only reports 47 hrs.

I picked up a 652 with a WD 2TB drive. I looked for the details of the drive and it reports only 47 HD hours capacity.
I opened the unit up thinking it was the original 160 GB drive, but it was the advertised 2TB. The drive is dated 5/09.

I haven't done anything further yet. Whats' up with this?

Newb here! Just a few questions

I have a tivo series 4 premiere that I got in the fall of 2011. Have a lifetime sub on it, only do it for OTA

I believe it can record 47 hours HD, so that's what a 250 gb or 320 gb hard drive? Anyways, I'm not a computer genius, but I'm not terrible at computers either. Do I need linux to swap drives out? Or can I have windows 8 like I do now? I saw linux mentioned so I got worried. I know how to run a boot cd, or how to make a flash drive bootable.

Also, is it that much harder to put a 3 or 4 tb hard drive into a tivo series 4 premiere? I have a spare 2 tb handy, which is probably more than I'd ever need in the first place, but if it's not much more difficult to put in a 3 or 4 tb, I might just do that.

I don't care about keeping my programs either that's already on the hard drive, or the season pass settings, all I care about is getting the MAX amount of space on the tivo. thanks a million!

Also, do I need to know the EXACT model number of my tivo for anything in the process? Thank you!

Ok, So I am an idiot....

So my Premiere XL4 was making intermittent noise like the HD was starting to go. It's got a WD20EURS and so I ran out and bought a WD20EFRX Red series so I could back it up before it crapped out. Took the cover off, and it's the #&@^# fan that was making the noise.

So, I figure I may as well make a backup while I can.

First - should I reinstall the old drive and keep the new one pristine, or figure that I've already got a couple of years out of the old drive and put the old one on the shelf?

Second - Any preference around here for ddrescue remix v12.04 vs. using JMFS v104? I have 316HD hours now and it seems I would have to run JMFS and not expand (both are 2TB), but it's not clear to me if I'd have to supersize? Somehow I think the bit for bit copy of ddrescue is somehow more logical, but I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Drive won't Expand

Hello Everyone,

I need some help. I've spent hours looking through previous solutions on this forum and just haven't found an answer for my situation. I have a 1.5 TB that copies fine, no errors. Then when I go to expand I get the "Expand Did not finish successfully" error.

Equipment: TiVo Premiere 4

Background: My house was struck by lightning a few weeks ago, and fried all the HDMI ports in my house. I used the replacement program from TiVo to get a new box, and keep my discounted monthly rate. I then transfered all the shows from the old box to the new box via my network. Then took both drives out of the TiVo's, and copied the new drive to my previously expanded 1.5 TB drive out of the old unit. Copy worked fine, expand gives me the error. Both Hard drives work fine in the TiVo. Previous expansion with the same drive for the now bad TiVo was completed on the same computer/motherboard and hard drive, and I had no problems.

Troubleshooting: I've taken the following steps: Run a Full HD scan with WD's utility of my 1.5 tb drive and a full scan of the new TiVo's drive with SeaTools. Both come back with no errors. I tried re-starting the whole process with no luck. I've also done KS57 and KS58 on both drives, then tried to re expand and even re copy and re expand, still got the same symptoms. I also tried the hdparm method described in another thread but that says "HPA setting seems invalid"

fdisk gives me:

Disk /dev/sdb: 1500.3 GB, 1500301910016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 182401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table

hdparm -N /dev/sdb gives me:

dev/sdb:
max sectors = 18446744072344861488/2930277168(18446744072344861488?), HPA setting seems invalid

Hard Drive options for Series 2 (Toshiba RS-TX20)?

$

It seems it's time to replace the HD in my Series 2 TiVo (Toshiba RS-TX20). A few years ago, I replaced the stock HD with a 750GB Seagate DB35. However lately I'm getting picture freezes, and a scan with SeaTools shows some bad sectors.

I have a PATA/SATA converter, so I'm all set there. I just need some HD recommendations. I don't need a lot of storage, since this is just a secondary unit, so anything 750GB to 1TB should be fine.

Looking at Western Digital's website for AV drives, I see:

WD7500AURS | SATA 3 Gb/s | 750 GB

WD10EURX | SATA 6 Gb/s | 1 TB

WD10EURS | SATA 3 Gb/s | 1 TB

There is also a "surveillance" drive listed:

WD10PURX | SATA 6 Gb/s | 1 TB

Looking on newegg.com as an example, the WD7500AURS and WD10EURS aren't found. The WD10EURX is available, but the description says that the WD10PURX is the newer model of that drive.

So is the WD10PURX the model I should go with? I searched in tivocommunity.com forums for that model, but got no hits, so that makes me think it may not be a viable option.

Thanks for any help folks can provide.
