Premiere 4 with upgrade drive, lights flashing

$

Woke up excited that jmfs had finished the copy of my original drive to my new 2TB drive. Expanded and supersized, dropped in the TiVo and...I get a light show. The welcome screen comes on very briefly and then all the lights start flashing (green power stays solid). Works when I put the original drive back in. Plugged it back into my computer and jmfs sees it as a TiVo drive.
Suggestions? From what I have found searching, it seems to be a bad drive. I'll run some diags on it after I've had some caffeine!

after following instructions to installing tivo desktop plus, we linked the tivo to our computer and tried to transfer programs. The programs show in the menu to choose which ones to transfer but some have a red X before the name of the program. What does this mean?

Upgrade series 3 HD

I have an odd problem. I have a Series3 HD 32hr Model tcd648250B. I have three older hard drives that are 1 tb 1 tb and 240 g. They all boot up fine in the tivo. I am trying to put a brand new wd green 1 tb in this unit. I have tried winmsf copy and backup and restore to the new drive and when I put the new drive in, the tivo first splash screen shows up and never goes any further then this. The lights on the front stay on and never change. I even bought the instant back for this unit and baked the new wd hard drive and have the same effect. I hear lots about power supplies, but the other three older hd's boot fine. I have also tried mfslive 1.4 backup/restore and same effect. Any suggestions?

exceeding format limits

i know on fat 32 if you try to copy a file bigger than 4 gig you get an error unable to write file once the pc gets to the 4 gig byte of the file

and i think on the mac it immediately said unable to copy file without even trying to copy.

i was wondering what happens on the tivo if you try to record over the partition size limit if you get any warnings.

i have a series 4 based tivo and lately there has been a lot of redundancies in the repetition of deadliest especially the same 2 or 3 episodes and even episodes that dont match titles and even corruption of the signal (blip) like you get when a satellite transition does not go smoothly yes cable gets their signal from satellites and repackages the signal for cable).

the box had a 320 gig drive and it is now approaching 400 gig of a 2 tb drive and i wonder if when the drive gets fuller than 320 gig there is no warning such as a drive failure or such if all that happens is if it writes over old data like the buffer does and security dvr does.

cloning tivo hd with laptop, do i need 2 usb sata adapters?

i know there are many MANY places that discuss how to use winMFS to clone the tivo hd harddrive, and i've watched 2 youtube videos that pretty much walk you through it. the thing is, all the descriptions i've seen use a desktop, which i don't have.

i'm not a techie (more of a dangerous novice), but from what i can tell you need 2 sata adapters and both drives plugged in simultaneously to do a full clone (and keep the programs) using mfscopy.

the harddrive i'm planning on buying is this one from amazon.com, which people confirm worked for their tivo hd.
WD AV-GP 1 TB AV Video Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD10EURX

my problem/questions:
1) am i correct in assuming i need 2 adapters?
2) do i need the "double usb" adapters for extra power, or would a "single usb" adapter work?
3) my lenovo has 3 usb's on 1 side, and 1 usb on the other. if i need 2 "double usb" adapters, i'm gonna have a problem. could i get away with the "double usb" for the 1TB drive (runs 7200rpm), and a "single usb" for the original tivo hd drive?
4) all things being equal, i'd rather not spend a ton of money on these adapters (although they're nice to have for emergencies, i'm not sure when i'd use one again-- let alone 2). can i get away with the cheap ones under $8 or do i really need to fork out $20+ times two?

those are my big questions. given the fount of knowledge out here, i'm open to adapter recommendations (or any pitfalls i'm missing) too! :)

thanks!

Program to copy old tivo hard drive to a new hard drive

I have a Premiere elite, Are there a program out now will copy the recorded programs and the software to a new Hard drive?

PeeCee Advice Needed

I'm a Mac user. I have had WinTel hardware in the past but I recycled my Win 95 and XP boxes some years ago.

I have a stable of TiVos, mostly THD models (nothing newer, currently) but a few S2 boxes as well. I have the original drives for all and being able to copy those drives or backups to a new drive is the only reason some of these are still functioning.

For some years I have been using the MFSLive DVD to copy TiVo drives. I have a first gen Intel iMac that boots to the MFSLive DVD. I connect my TiVo drives via SATA-to-USB adapters. It's slow but reliable and gets the job done. The iMac is now nine years old and isn't going to last forever. So I'm planning to build a PC just for the purpose of copying and backing up TiVo drives. Also, the latest copy job was a 1 TB drive with 770 GB of recordings and it took over 15 hours getting just 14 MB/second overall. I want to copy at SATA II speeds or better.

The future of TiVo drive copy/backup seems to be WinMFS, which I cannot currently run, having no Windows machines. So I'm going to build one specifically for this one job. As a bonus, I'll finally have something that can run WDIdle. Here's what I envision:

Inexpensive PC, Dual boot, OEM Windows, Linux

Probably mid-tower case to accommodate the needed drive bays.

Built-in video (HDMI out?)

Enough RAM to run Windows and facilitate drive copying.

One fixed (internal) drive with Windows/Linux.

Optical drive, bootable, read-only is fine, no need to burn

Two or more trayless drive bays to allow hot swap of bare SATA drives.

Example trayless bays: two 5.25 inch bays accommodate three 3.5 inch drives...
<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816215243>

Does this seem adequate? How might it be improved?

How common is SATA III on new motherboards? Although TiVo may not use SATA III drives yet, it couldn't hurt to plan for the future.

What's the minimum Windows version that can run WinMFS?

Any and all advice and comments will be appreciated.

Put HD XL hard drive in XL?

$

I have an HD XL and was recently gifted an HD with lifetime service. I've seen lots of posts about upgrading to non-TiVo hard drives, but can't find anything about swapping drives between TiVos.

Is this easy to do?

Cloning Tivo HD and upgrading to 1TB using laptop - one man's journey.

$
0
0
After my Tivo HD (series 3) drive was getting worse and worse, I finally set out to replace the drive and upgrade to a 1TB drive. My problem was trying to figure out how to clone the drive (ie. keeping recordings) using a laptop and USB ports, since most of the descriptions I found used a desktop. My other problem is that I’m really not a techie, and not at all experienced with opening up hardware, other than to upgrade RAM.

The good news is that I finally got it to work.

The bad news is that it was a little more of an adventure than I expected.

Spoiler alert: WinMFS didn’t work. It recognized my Tivo drive, but couldn’t see my blank 1TB drive. Yes, I ran it as an administrator. And yes, when I went to “devices and printers,” both my USB-SATA cables were recognized by Windows 7, and the hard drives that were connected to it were reported to be “working properly”. Apparently, I’m not alone. The solution I actually got from was from another post here. Thanks, tspalgpf! (I was forced to remove the link, just google "WinMFS - Can't see blank drive but saw Tivo drive fine")

(Basically, it is to go old school and make a MFSLive Linux Boot CD, and type in a linux command. Which of course was a little intimidating, but I eventually figured it out. More on that later.)

Because I really couldn’t find a single place giving an overall summary of what EXACTLY to do aimed at near-novices like me, I figured I’d give back and post what worked for me. I do not want to imply this is the only way, but again it did work.

“Cloning a Tivo HD hard drive and upgrading to 1TB drive using a laptop” (one method)

What I have:
-Lenovo E530 Laptop running Windows 7
-Tivo HD (series 3)

After doing some research on amazon, I found some good reviews of people successfully upgrading their Tivo HD using the western digital WD10EURX. This is a 1TB drive. (I’m not sure if the Tivo HD Series 3 can accept a 2TB drive, but I seem to remember reading there might be a problem. I could be wrong.)

I also realized I would need 2 USB-SATA cables. thanks to those who responded to my original posted question. (link removed, google "cloning tivo hd with laptop, do i need 2 usb sata adapters?")

When searching amazon, I saw a bunch of adapters that had 2 usb ports to help supply power. With some help from posted replies (thanks, unitron, et.al.!), I found out those were for 2.5” drives, and these are 3.5” drives.

Adapters for 3.5” require a separate power supply (typically included). Although you probably only need 1 adapter if you wanted to do a simple backup using WinMFS, 2 adapters are needed if you want to do a complete copy and upgrade. Since I figured I really wouldn’t have an immediate need for these adapters again, my original inclination was to pick up a couple cheap ones for $10 each. Unfortunately, according to more than a few reviewers, those come with some questionable power supplies that fried a few drives, smoke, etc. Not being keen on the prospect of burning down my house, I sucked it up and went for the Sabrent USB 2.0 SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5 HARD DRIVE CONVERTER. (Really, not a bad deal since $13x2 qualified it for free shipping!) It also has some activity lights which are kinda nice to have.

So, to summarize, this is what I bought:
-Western Digital WD10EURX 1TB drive
-(2) Sabrent USB 2.0 SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5 adapters.

From here, you need to disassemble your Tivo and get your hard drive out. (Do you know what a Torx 10 screwdriver is? Well, you’re gonna need one. Basically, it’s got a 6 pointed star head.) There are a few good youtube videos that talk you through it, but they don’t use a laptop.

I was forced to delete the links, but they are titled:

Upgrade Your TIVO HD Hard drive (aramistech)

How to Add an External Hard Drive to Your TiVo HD video from Answers (Vitor lourenço)-- it's not exactly what we're doing, but some good pointers.

You also should get familiar with the MFSlive website. (link deleted- sorry! just google). They have written the support software which is basically fundamental to doing the upgrade. Their crowning achievement appears to be the WinMFS software package. It runs on windows and makes the upgrade much easier (and detailed in those videos). The problem is, apparently for me and some others, when run on a laptop (using 2 USB/SATA adapters), it would only recognize the Tivo drive and not the blank destination drive. As shown on those videos, it’s still a good idea to download it and run a basic backup of the original drive to your computer (which does not include recordings), in case you run into problems later.

As I mentioned earlier, the solution offered on the post mentioned earlier is to go old school. You need to create a “MFSLive Linux Boot CD”. There is a helpful link that takes you through it:

(Forced to delete link, but choose Quickstart from the main MFSlive homepage).

Again, this may be really basic for some, but what you do is you download it in the typical fashion, and when you run it, it basically asks you to insert a blank cd-rom and the program burns itself onto it. Hold on to it, you’ll need it soon.

Before you begin, you’ll need to “generate command", which means to get the Linux command you'll need to type in later to manually do the upgrade. Definitely use the link from the above quickstart page. It uses a few dropdown menus, which may look a little intimidating at first. First, you select your Tivo (SA series 3 is for my Tivo HD, DTV is DirectTV i believe) and model number, found on back of your Tivo. Then, you select your current “A” drive. Even though they give you a ton of choices, the standard size is 160 for the original drive on the Tivo HD. On the second dropdown, choose “SATA or USB 1.” You can leave the “B” drive blank. Next, move the new “A” drive dropdown. For a 1TB hard drive, choose 1000 and then “SATA or USB 2.” Next, click the box for save recording, presuming you want this. Then, go ahead and click the box for “Custom Linux Swap Size.” I had to look this up and, honestly, I’m still not completely sure what it means, but apparently it adds to stability when using large drives (increases to 500MB for a 1000G drive, rather than the standard 128MB?). Finally, submit and get your linux command. You probably should print it out, you’ll need it later.

For what it’s worth, mine looked like this:

backup –qTao - /dev/sda | restore –s 500 –xzpi - /dev/sdb

Don’t freak out. As I mentioned earlier, I still consider myself a “dangerous novice”, and I really have no idea what that code exactly means. But when I tried typing it later, it DIDN’T work. But I DID eventually figure out why. Basically (and forgive me if this is not exactly right), “sda” and “sdb” seem to refer to the usb ports on your computer. You may find that after you run the Boot CD, these may need to change according to which ports your drives are actually connect to. More on that later.

Once you’re ready to go, make sure your laptop is powered off. Plug the smallish data adapter (labeled ATA) to back of each hard drive and the usb portion to your computer. Then plug each power supply adapter to each hard drive. You should be able to feel them whirring, and my Sabrent adapters did light up. Next, power up your laptop, and as soon as it lets you, open up the cd tray and drop in the cd-rom before windows boots up (or you can leave it in before you poweroff and restart). The program should launch directly into Linux and skip windows. Eventually you get a choice of 4 options, and you should pick 1 (also, the default).

What happens next is a couple minutes of scrolling code, that eventually stops. If you hit enter, you get a prompt (if I remember right, it’s MFSlive#>). BUT, before you type in your code, I suggest you look at the 10-15 lines of code immediately above. You’ll probably notice the name of your hard drive somewhere in there (for me, again, WD10EURX) and it will be generally be associated with a sd- code, referring to what port it’s ACTUALLY connected to. Same for the original Tivo drive (WD16xxxxxxx, can’t remember exactly). It turned out for me, the original Tivo drive (WD16) was actually connected to “sdc”, and that my blank destination drive (WD10EURX) was actually connected to “sdb”.

So, for example, I had to change my code slightly to read:

backup –qTao- /dev/sdc | restore –s 500 –xzpi - /dev/sdb (but again, your sd-‘s may vary)

After this, success! And it does automatically open up the whole 1TB drive, which apparently is a prompt on the actual WinMFS program.

But word to the wise, depending on how much you have recorded on your drive, how corrupted your original drive is, and if you’re using usb 2.0, it may take awhile... mine took me 5-6 hours. Or at least that’s what the ETA was listed as. This turned into a later night project, and I went to bed (not something I’d recommend if you’re using those cheaper cables whose power sources may or may not catch fire. Come to think of it, probably wasn’t a good idea to do it overnight at all).

When you are done, you will get another command prompt. “Poweroff” will shut your computer down. Don’t forget to remove your CD-rom before restarting.

After that, simply put the new drive back in the Tivo, and rehook everything up. Tivo will reboot, but once it’s done, your programs and settings should be just like your old drive. Go to settings and system information. You should be satisfied to see you now have 142 HD hours (or 1241 SD hours).

Thanks again to all people and resources that helped me figure this out. Hopes this makes it easier for someone else! MFSlive rules!

I have series 2 with 80gb hd and need to replace it with a 160 hd. Every time I use MFSLive I get the above message. I enter the hd as hdc but then it says it doesn't recognize hdc10! Premiere stalls when pressing TIVO button

Hello all,

I bought a used Premiere TCD746320 with a 320GB drive. Transferred the image to a 2TB WD20EURS using the method here rosswalker.co.uk/tivo_upgrade but ran into problem with original disk errors during the copy so I used ddrescue and was able to make the copy to the 2TB drive work. Expanded it to 2TBs. Tivo reports 317 hours free. Ran KS57 and KS54 (no SMART errors).

However, for the past year every few days to a week my Tivo slows, i.e. I come home, turn the TV on, live TV is fine, push the TIVO button and the live TV goes into the small top right box still playing but no menus show up. No commands including Live work from the remote (yet the Tivo box flashes its LED so it is receiving the IR). No recordings are ever lost and all recordings continue perfectly when in this state (except of course during a power cycle). After some time the menus may fill in but mostly I have to power cycle. This has been going on for a year since the upgrade.

Lately I put it on a UPS, no change in behavior.

I'm not sure if the issue is my WD20EURS drive and the whole Advanced Format 4K issue slowing things down or the fact that my original image had issues.

I'm thinking I should try to re-image the drive with a known good image. What do you think? Where could I get a good image (either 320GB or 2TB) that I could use with DVRbars? Or is there a 4K alignment thing I could/should do?

Any help appreciated!

Planning on getting a Roamio. If current tools work might I will get a plus and upgrade it myself to 4 or 5 Terabytes. Otherwise I would go for the pro and probably still end up upgrading it.

Anyone care to speculate?

DVRExpander upgrading can be duplicate instead lose recordings

I have a Elite connected to a old WD External DVR Expander 500Gb to 1Tb, with Time Warner isn't possible transfer almost none recording via TiVo Desktop.

So attaching the new DVRExpander will lose recordings, there is an alternative as duplicate the drives or each Tivo perform a recording signature on the DVRExpander.

Thanks for comment

TiVo Power Supply Board for Premiere series 4 voltages

$

i have the series 4 tivo 746 and i was wondering what the voltages that the power supply puts out.

if someone has torn down a tivo series 4 and reverse engineered the power supply.

i know there is 5 and 12 and possibly 3.3 at the hard drive cable but i am not sure what the other voltages are.

if someone has a pinout on the power supply.

i suspect the reason for the symptoms of bad sectors is caused by a power supply on the edge of failure and is starving the system slightly.

i found at http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...3uf_3sec_.html

basically it is a bunch of capacitors paralleled and as long as none of the pins exceed 15 volts i should be able to use these as a power stiffening device sort of like like why there are 1 and 2 f caps used in high power car sound systems.

off-line scan smart test taking forever

I recently started noticing pixelation during live tv/recordings, a rewind does not show the pixelation, so I suspect my 2 month old wd20eurs av-gp drive is already dying. I booted into a kickstart 54 and everything passed the test but the off-line scan has been running for over 32hours, was estimated to finish at 675 minutes, now its at 1900 minutes! Sounds like the drive already has massive bad sectors? Anyone ever seen this drive take this long on the smart test off-line scan?

it's a bummer because i just replaced a bad wd20eurs 2 months ago with this brand new one. I also ran a wd extended test on the drive before putting into service and it passed.

guess its time to pull the drive again and try and get a backup of it.

Hardware clone, then software "expand"?

$

I own a hardware hard drive SATA cloner.

My plan is to upgrade from a failing 1TB to a new 2TB disk.

If I want to use my hardware cloner to clone from 1TB to 2TB, it will keep the partions exactly the same... So I'll have 1TB used and 1TB "unused."

My theory is that using a Windows partition "expand" tool I'll get the extra 1TB to be seen.

Thoughts?

Or should I just not bother and use JMFS for it?

Thanks in advance.
