Tivo Premiere RAM upgrade?

$

I seems as though some additional RAM (Not HD) may help speed up some of the application level functionality (menus, netflix, hulu, etc). Has anyone upgraded the memory in a Premiere? tbqh, I don't even know how much it currently has, but unless its 32-bit and already has 2GB there should be some improvement. Any assistance is appreciated, thanks!

Dvr Backup And Restore Software for Windows (DvrBARS)

**WARNING**

1. This software is provided "as is" with absolutely no warranty of any kind.
2. Opening your TiVo will void the manufacturer's warranty.
3. While every effort has been made to prevent data loss, the ultimate responsibility is yours.

OVERVIEW:

This is a Windows program designed to backup and restore TiVo DVRs. It will run on XP or later, and it should work on anything from a Series 1 to a Premiere. It is not intended as a recovery tool for corrupt or failing drives, and it will not expand or "supersize" your drive (yet).

THE BASICS:

1. Download DvrBARS and unzip it to somewhere on your drive.
2. Connect a TiVo drive to your computer. USB adapters will work, but are generally much slower than a SATA or PATA direct connection.
3. Read step 2 again. DvrBARS only scans the drives once when it first starts up. If you add, remove or change your drive configuration while it's running you will confuse the poor thing. I also strongly recommend that you do not run Windows Disk Manager while a TiVo drive is connected, because it will try to "initialize" it, which will damage the boot sector.
4. Run DvrBARS with an account that's a member of the Administrators group or right-click it and choose Run as Administrator.
5. If you like it and want to help support future development, find the donate option in the System Information screen.

NOW WHAT?

There are three backup options (Full, Modified Full, and Truncated).

Full is perfect if you have a drive that's straight from the factory because most of the drive is all zeroes. A Full backup "xeroxes" the entire drive, but due to the way dynamic VHD files work you'll get a byte-for-byte copy of the entire drive in a relatively small file. For Premieres that's usually about 2.5GB and you can zip it down even further.

Modified Full backups selectively copy all of the sectors that are in use, including your recordings. You'll need a lot of disk space if you have a lot of recordings.

Truncated backups are like Modified backups, but your recordings are excluded. The final backup file will be about the same size as a Full backup of a factory drive that has never been booted, especially if you exclude the alternate Root partition (see the Settings screen).

All three backup methods will preserve your settings, CableCARD pairing, Season Passes, guide data etc.

There are two restore options (Full and Quick).

Full restores write all of the information in the backup image to the target drive, including the sectors that weren't backed up. They get zeroes.

Quick restores only write the sectors that contain data. The rest of the target drive is untouched.

NOTES:

There's a roughly 2.2TB limit inherent in the VHD file format. If you try to do a Full backup of a 2TB drive that has been in use for a while it will probably run for about 10 hours and die.

You cannot make a Modified or Truncated backup of a dual drive TiVo unless both drives are connected. It has to be able to scan the entire MFS file system to figure out what sectors to include.

For adventurous souls, you can use the VHD files with VMWare or Windows Virtual PC. Use the VHD as the source drive, boot the virtual computer with the mfstools or jmfs ISO file and you can expand, supersize, etc to another drive.

If you have Vista or later you can also mount a VHD file in Disk Manager and use it as the source drive for further operations like turning a Full or Modified backup into a Truncated backup, but be careful to check the Read Only box.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I have a perfect image of a TCD748000 Premiere XL straight from the factory. I also have a nearly pristine TCD746320 Premiere image, but it's larger because it came from a drive that had already been through one upgrade. If you have a "virgin" drive laying around somewhere, run a full backup and send me a PM. Someday I hope to have clean images of every recent model available to the community.

Donate if you can. An awful lot of time and money has gone into this project so far, and the 100GB Dropbox account I set up for the images wasn't free either.

KUDOS:

Two members here (retiredqwest and jmbach) deserve a LOT of thanks and a big chunk of the credit. Their support and patience made it possible.

The pioneers who developed mfstools and jmfs also have my deepest thanks. DvrBARS is an entirely new work, but the basic knowledge of the MFS file system came from them.

AND FINALLY:

I'll shut up now. If you have any problems (and there are bound to be some) post the details here.

Enjoy!

Add live RTMP streams to the tivo EPG?

I have been using streambaby to serve my home movies to my 3 tivo's (Big hats off to those that inspired and help make it what it is today!!). After playing with a computer based media player, I have discovered a feature that would be really cool if it could be implemented into the tivo epg. Is there any way a virtual channel can be added to the epg, such as one called "home vids" and have the tivo client pull movies from a remote folder already accessable through streambaby and populate the created channel meta on the epg (randomally)? All of my movies have xml info files beside them, and contain all the info the epg would need. Maybe even be able to add a live RTMP stream assigned to a custom virtual channel? Or even a feed from a security camera on your front door. Someone rings the doorbell and you could change to channel 800 to see who it is. Similar to PsuedoTV add-on for XBMC.. I searched but I dont how the information gets into the guide? xml, or if theres even a way we can append it?

no error correcting/factory rejects?

i am not sure if this is the right place to ask so you mods can move to the correct place.

i was wondering does the tivo boxes do error correction on the writes or just blindly write?

or does tivo use factory rejects? hard drives that does not meet oem'ers (dell, hp, etc) specs for bad sector count so they sell them to tivo.

the problem i noticed is back in march when i recorded a bunch of shows on the syfy channel at random times on a couple of shows there was corrupted signal macroblocking and complete drops.

then it stopped for a while and now that i deleted those shows it started again.

i was wondering to maybe keep costs down tivo does not use the latest in cpu technology rather they use lat years or a couple years old cpu technology (like celeron is to pentium) they removed error correction so the box writes the stream without doing some kind of crc checksum ( remember in the old days on mac where the finder would write to the floppy and verify the copy the same here blindly writing to save a few cpu cycles.

or would getting a ssd help any because ssd's are faster and no moving parts scratch off magnetic media should they contact the disks?

Need help transferring shows from dead TivoHD to Premiere4

Hi all,

My TivoHD died today after many great years of service. I got the flashing green light, no TV output. Looks like a power supply issue, but honestly, I don't care why it failed... I'm not going to repair it. Instead, I am upgrading to a Premiere 4 as its replacement.

I have a LOT of shows on the TivoHD's disk. Assuming the disk is still good, I'm looking for advice on how I can transfer all recordings to the Premiere 4. Further, while I've got the Premiere 4 opened up for this recovery, I'm going to upgrade the disk.

What is a safe/good way to go about this? I have a Linux PC standing by, and am willing to do pretty much anything, so long as I only mount the TivoHD disk and the original Premiere 4 disk as read-only.

Thanks for your help!

500GB to 1TB in a Series 3

I was about to get a 500GB Western Digital drive (WD5000AVDS) to put in a Series 3 (OLED). However, I am thinking for about $15 more, I can get a 1TB Western Digital drive (WD10EURX) instead.

Will then put a Series 3 (OLED) image I have on it via WinMFS. I have used this image before for another WD 500GB drive and all worked good. Can I simply do the same thing for a 1TB size drive? Or is there maybe some special things/procedures I need to do with WinMFS when going to this larger size? Or is that only really for if I want to go above 2TB?

Suggestions for a good 1TB Tivo HD drive?

I had a old (~5 years) spare 500GB Seagate Barracuda lying around so I upgraded my Tivo HD. Would have preferred 1TB but free is free. Upgrade was easy, and it works great. Only problem is the drive is super loud. I can hear the head moving back and forth from the other room. I'd rather buy a new drive than listen to this all the time.

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap-ish (less than ~$75) 1TB drive for my Tivo that won't be so loud?

Possibilities:

Series 4 WinMFS drive - Solved

So if you have a premiere Tivo (S4) and you've WinFS'd your drive to "fix swap" or did the bootpage option1/option2 fix and you find your drive not booting it's because it's overwritten block 0.

The fix here is to get a copy of a good block 0 and overwrite it. This can be done by using iBored and making a VHD of your drive, then re-writing it back to your drive.

At minimum we could see that it was using /dev/hda vs /dev/sda - which is also documented in these forums that /dev/sda was a change in the S4.

All the credit goes to jmbach working thorugh this with me at "odd" hours. I can't thank him enough for his help and hope this fix will help others. There are a few threads in here that discuss this issue.

I'm replacing the original hard drive in my Series 2 Dual Tuner TiVo with a 1TB drive. I have 2 different drives 1TB drives at my house that I'm considering. I have a WD1001FALS and a WD10EARX. Which one is better suited for this application? Will either have to have WDidle3 or the align utility ran on them?

Expand - Failed 1.5TB -> 2TB drive

About a month ago I upgraded my P4 to a 1.5TB drive. It upgraded and expanded effortlessly.

However fastforward to now.. My TiVo started to stutter and pause and the forums suggested it was caused by a potentially bad drive. Ugg. So I ripped apart my TiVo and decided to upgrade the drive to a new 2TB drive.

Last night I started the copy, it was completed with just 3 errors noted.

However when I went to do the expand, it failed stating a negative seek error. Has anyone run into this issue before?

After trying a few times and still getting the error I decided to just get the my TiVo back up and just loose the 500GBs. Any work on it another day.

Any ideas on how to get the drive to expand?

Thanks,

Rick

In the past I have upgraded my other two OLED S3's (One I got 300hr from a 2tb drive off ebay and the other time I did it myself but got like 270hrs from a 2tb) Anyway, I want to do the same to my TiVo TCD652160. Is the upgrade any different that the OLED ones? Can I expand more than the 300ish he with a 3 or 4 tb? I see a new method on the sticky which I'll try and expand JFHS

Activate then Clone or Clone then Activate?

Hi Guys,
So I am getting an TiVo Premiere and it should arrive any day now. Because I used a special offer, when it comes, I have to activate it via phone and not online (at least at first). Also, before I purchased it, I came here to tivocommunity and went ahead and bought a 2TB WD green drive. I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind giving me some friendly advice on what order I should do everything in. My to do list are the following three things:

- transfer my programs from my tivo HD to the tivo premiere
- activate the TiVo Premiere
- Replace the 320GB hard drive inside the TiVo Premiere w/ the 2TB hard drive (clone it).

Which goes first, second, and third?

Also, I have a DVR expander connected to the TiVo HD at the moment. If you guys think I should transfer the programs from the TiVo HD first, would all of it fit on the 320GB stock drive w/in the TiVo Premiere?

Thanks guys!

After upgrading drive I wake up to Powering Up

This is for my newly acquired TCD652160 which I installed a 2tb WD drive into and seems to have gone smoothly...but...

Sometime in the middle of the night it restarts and gets stuck on Powering Up. If I unplug it and plug it back in it boots fine. This has happened twice and I'll of course see if it happens again tonight but has anyone else had this happen? Is there maybe a sleep function on the WD drives?

Is this a sign of a dying power supply? How can I test things to determine what the problem really is?

I was just passed a TIVO that was not booting. STUCK at welcome screen. The power was cut off to the device abruptly and it hasn't boot since. Everything points to the HD having failed in reading however I remove the drive and I can hear and feel it spinning. I plugged the drive into windows 8 and in the system management I can see the unallocated 1TB drive.

Did I just mess up the boot sector?

I feel this drive has some life and would like to wipe and restart it. Everything I have read appears to require backing up the existing working drive and using this image on the new drive. I am not upgrading to larger disk, just hoping I can make the current one work.

Can someone please guide me. In reading I think I need an image for model and tools to load the image on the drive. Looking forward to hearing from the group. Thanks in advance.

I guess even if we get the disk right there is still a possibility the power supply is not functioning as designed but we will cross that road when we get there.

Can I use a Premiere 4 drive in a Premiere?

Hi all,

Just purchased a Premiere XL 2 tuner (TCD748000) without a HDD. At the same time, I am upgrading my Premiere 4 to a 2TB with jmfs. Could I just do another one and drop it in the 2 tuner and have it work or would I need an image from the 2 tuner to start with?

Thanks!

TiVo Series3 / WinMFS fails to expand as expected

I have a TiVo Series3 (OLED TCD648250B). In 2010 I updated the drive to a 1.5T WD EARS HD and expanded it up to the 1.26T capacity via WinMFS. I turned off intelipark via WDidle3 /d. This worked fine for 2.5 years. The S3 has recently begun to reboot and so I decided to just re-image a new drive. I took backups of my original 250G HD in 2010.

So I restore the image to another WD 1.5T with intelipark turned off, I answer yes to expand and then supersize it. Put it back into the Tivo and it reports 36 hrs of HD capacity, when I expect to see 157 Hrs.

I am following these steps here, exactly.

• In WinMFS, select File -> Select Drive and select the new replacement SATA drive
• In WinMFS, select File -> Restore and select the backup file you saved earlier. Click Start. This will restore the TiVo software to the new drive.

Note: Do not change the swap size. Leave it at the default of 128.
• When the restore is complete, WinMFS will ask you if you want to expand the drive to use the new space. Click Yes.

If you do not see this dialog box, then select Tools-> Mfsadd.
• Select Tools-> MfsSuperSize -> On.

I’ve done this half a dozen times now with different drives (all WD 1.5T) and I even downloaded a new version of winMFS ( beta 9.3f) and every time it does not show the expanded capacity to 157Hrs.

I am using an eSata drive dock and winMFs sees the drive just fine and does the image OK.

I tried to do the kickstart 54 and it just would not take, not sure what I was doing wrong there.

I downloaded a virgin image from a member here via dropbox for my S3 model, restored from that one too and it also reported 36 hrs.

What in the world am I doing wrong/missing? I don’t recall any of these issues when I did my upgrade in 2010.

I don't care about the content on the old 1.5T HD. I can get the S3 back up and running, but kinda wanted to get full use of the new 1.5T HD to get me back where I was before.

thanks for your help.
