TiVo Premiere 320GB -> 1TB -> 2TB? Also, 2TB limit for Roamio/Bolt?

$

I have a TiVo Premiere with 320GB drive which I successfully upgraded to 1TB drive a few years ago by using jmfs method following the instruction on this forum

I understand that with jmfs method, I can only expand the drive once and I won't be able to use jmfs to do the 1TB -> 2TB, I could use the original drive and run jmfs to go from 320GB -> 2TB but then I will not have access to my shows stored on the current 1TB drive

Is there any work around out there that can let me do 1TB -> 2TB now?

Another question I have is I am getting conflict info regarding Roamio/Bolt and drive larger than 3TB

My understanding is that if put in a 2TB drive to Roamio/Bolt, everything would be find, if put in a 4TB drive, I will have to either blessing it or run MFSR in windows to properly format it

But what about 3TB drive? I read on some threads that 3TB and under drives are drop in replacement without the need to special format, but then on some threads and sites (like rosswalker) there is a term 2.2TB limit that claim that roamio/bolt will only format drive larger than 2TB to 2.2TB?

What about external eSATA?

My apologies in advance if this has been asked and answered, but has anyone done any research on how to use a generic eSATA external enclosure on the Bolt or Roamio? Looks like the community has a handle on upsize/downsize/copy/restore/backup but what about external eSATA? I've looked, but did not find anything. It's obviously doable, Weaknees has a solution. It's not my intention to deny Weaknees any business, I just like doing my own thing, like building my own PC.

WinMFS sees no drives

I downloaded and am trying WinMFS Beta Build 9.3f.

I'm running it on a physical Windows 8.1 machine (tried it via USB-SATA on a VM on my Mac and didn't see the drive) and while the drive itself is seen by Windows, WinMFS shows no drives at all for A & B, even when I check Show Mounted Drives.

Following advice in another thread, I made a partition on the 2TB WD20EURX and ensured I could copy data to it. WinMFS still doesn't see it. The drive is connected via internal SATA cable and both the computer and Windows seem to see it and work with it just fine.

I also ran the extended diagnostics off UBCD before I tried any of this - confirmed it has no errors. Also confirmed the Idle Timer is disabled.

I am trying to restore 652m.tbk to this 2TB WD drive, but don't know if I need to do something else to load the image into WinMFS to then place it on the 2TB WD drive.

Am I using an old version of WinMFS? Any other suggestions?

New HD Upgrade Issues

My thanks in advance for anyone that may be able to point me in the right direction.

I just received a replacement Roamio Plus. I am upgrading the HD to a 4tb WD40EZRX, along with upgrading a regular Roamio with the same drive.

In upgrading the plus, after starting up, the green screen picture attached appears, then goes into a continual reboot, eventually showing the same green screen, then rebooting again. This is continual.

In upgrading the base model, the green screen appears, followed by the purple screen picture attached. I hit the select button, only to have the same thing occur.

Anyone know what is happening and could you point me in the right direction?

Hi. I want to put a bigger HD in my Tivo OTA. I am totally confused at how to do this. What is the easiest way? I am not trying to save any settings, I just want to upgrade the standard HD to a 2 to 5 TB HD.

Also, what brands and models are the most compatible and reliable.

Thank you all in advance for the help.

I want to use a 2TB hard drive that's already been formatted for a premiere and use it for my new Roamio. Do I need to reformat the hard drive or just plug it in to the new Roamio. Not sure how I can blank a hard drive like its new. Or should I just buy a new hard drive? Thanks

My TCD140060 with upgraded (instantcake) drive just died. Can I just move the drive to a TCD24004A? or do I have to reprogram it for this hardware? I would love to just move the drive (settings and content). Both are series 2 single tuner.....

And, if I have to re-do it, will the InstantCake I have for the old model work on the new model?

Thanks in Advance!

Success upgrading Tivo HD 652160 with WinFMS/WD Red WD20EFRX

I've got a 652160 box with lifetime service that I wanted to upgrade, and thanks to you good people the process went without a hitch. It had 1 TB drive that I used Instant Cake on when the (ridiculously expensive) DVR expander drive enclosure failed a few years ago. Using WinMFS along with a WD Red WD20EFRX drive on a Windows 10 machine, I now have 318 hours of HD recording capability on this dinosaur.

For anyone who wants to perform this operation, you'll find that the original Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ (Last Updated: August/12/2010) is a bit long in the tooth. The discussion regarding the maximum single drive capacity is no longer true as long as you are running updated firmware (11.0m-01-2-652 is last one Tivo pushed.) Most of the instructions, however, are good up until this step:

Quote:

15. After the copy is complete, WinMFS should display a dialog box asking if you want to expand the drive. Click Yes..
Instead you'll want to follow...

to do the expansion.

Sometimes doing it as part of the copy or restore doesn't work out and you have do it all over again, but I haven't seen my way fail yet.

It took over 3 hours to copy my nearly full 1 TB drive, but the entire process went without a single hiccup. Thanks again to everyone for keeping these boxes up and running (and relevant!)

Roamio OTA + WD30EURX - just slap it in, or do I need to do something else?

I see some sites say up to 2TB is "plug and play" for Roamio, but other places say the 3TB also works but might cause extra unnecessary writes. What is the best practice to put this drive in my soon to be here OTA Roamio?

I have an HD lifetime unit that I would like to resurrect. I also have a 1TB drive that I would like to use for the resurrection. Thing is, I do not have the ability to use Instantcake. From what I see, and self admittedly I am not certain I am reading older posts correctly or not, but I cannot image the drive via a USB adapter.

I would be more than willing to pay someone for their time if they could image the drive for me. I'd also be very grateful.

Is there anybody able and willing to help?

success with WD20EURX-57T0FY0 man date 21 Jun 2015 in TCD652160

Hello

With some recent posts regarding issues with EURX drives manufactured recently, I wanted to post my experience.

I have 2 TCD652160, one upgraded, one stock. The upgraded hard drive died, so I purchased 2 new WD20EURX on Amazon on Jan 7.

The model I received is WD20EURX-57T0FY0, with a 21 Jun 2015 Manufacture date from Thailand.

I used winmfs, and neither worked in either TiVo.

After some troubleshooting, I used HDAT2 from the UBCD, and found that the power-up in standby (PUIS or PM2) was enabled, even though documentation states that pins 3 and 4 need to be jumpered for this to be enabled.
(Note, IntelliPark was not enabled on either drive)

I proceeded to use HDAT2 to disable this feature, and now both drives happily work in both TiVos, with no visible issues. Both TiVos have 318hrs of HD space.

Hope this helps others upgrading.

Replaced power supply with new one

System starts up, almost there, reboots

Did kickstart to check drive, passes all tests
Did kickstart 54, green screen, same almost there msg and reboot

So, I need a new drive because something in OS probably corrupted when the old PS died.

So, I dd copy am image to a 1tb drive
Is it possible to move my mfs partition with MFS or DD to the new drive from the old one? To save my shows?

Series 2 cant find screen to specify brand of cable box in Repeat Guided Setup

$

I have a Tivo Series 2 (single-tuner) and I can’t seem to figure out how to find the screen where I can specify the brand of cable box I’m using (which is a Comcast DTA aka Digital Transport Adapter, model number DC50Xu). All the Tivo support pages say to go to “Repeat Guided Setup” and select “Cable with box”, but I can’t seem to find a “Cable with box” option anywhere.

Here are the steps I tried… I went to “Repeat Guided Setup”, specified my zip code, then it gave me the following choices on the “TV Programming Source” page:

Cable only
Satellite Only
Satellite & cable
Satellite & antenna
Antenna only

Since I couldn’t find “Cable with box”, I chose “Cable only”, then specified “Internet” (for the IP Address), it then completed the Getting Setup Info step. I then answered Yes to “Cable Box?” and “I don’t know” to “Digital Cable?” (but also tried “Yes” which wasn’t any better). It then put me on the Cable Box Channel Lineup screen. But this is too late, I need the option to specify what brand of DTA I’m using. (I attempted to go thru Channel Lineup anyway just to see what would happen, but it doesn’t control the DTA correctly, it ends up just being a black screen, and I confirmed that my DTA is working fine by hooking it up directly to the TV, and the DTA is configured to Channel 3).

Does anyone know what steps I’m doing wrong while walking through Repeat Guided Setup that is missing the screen where you specify the brand of cable box (ie. “Cable with box”, etc.)?

Also, I thought about trying Settings->Channels->Channel Changing, but the “Channel Changing” option is completely missing. It only has the “Channel List” option. I’m assuming that has something to do with the fact that my Guided Setup didn’t complete, but I thought I’d mention it in case it’s relevant to the issue I’m facing.

Thanks in advance.

Series 3 upgrade (replace drive)

$

Over the weekend, I tried to upgrade my old Series 3 (the original one - not a TiVo HD), using WinMFS on a Win 7 machine to do a MFSCOPY from the original drive to a 1 TB one.

The copy seemed to work as expected (including asking if I wanted to expand the drive - presumably MFSSUPERSIZE).

But when I put the drive in the Tivo (taking the original out), it just reboots over and over again.

Any ideas or suggestions what I can do to troubleshoot?

Here are more details (in case they're relevant): I'm upgrading to a WD10EURX drive that's a new drive. I'd originally had a WD10EURX (or EURS - I don't recall now) in there, and in the last month that drive failed so I put the original back in, and had the vendor who sold me the original 1 TB drive send a replacement under warrantee.

The original drive was doing the same as this one (with the TiVo rebooting constantly), and with the original drive works. I admit, I didn't do any other checking on the old drive to confirm that it really was defective, and I no longer have that drive to check.

Also, when I first attempted this transfer (using WinMFS), I tried it on a Windows 10 pc here, and after a few hiccups, thought that it worked, only to have the TiVo rebooting issue I mentioned above. That was when I decided to dig a Win 7 machine out of mothballs and try that one, only to have the same ultimate result.

Should I look for a way to "low level" format the drive first? Should I have not done the "expand" on the drive?

One other thing - I'm also planning to upgrade my Roamio one of these days, so I probably should get over my hesitation to use MFSTools, and I could try using that to copy the data for the Series 3 too.

Roamio OTA 4 TB Upgrade - S308 Error Code

$

I picked up one of the Roamio OTA with Lifetime Service off of Amazon the end of last week and I'm trying to complete a 4 TB upgrade using a WD Green WD40EURX (Mfg 16 DEC 2014) and not having any luck. Here's what I've done so far:

1) Called TIVO and had them activate the Roamio. It's showing up as Active with Lifetime service on their site.

2) About 24 hours later (had to wait for the 4 TB to be delivered) I just tried popping the 4 TB in with the hope the Roamio had 20.4.6 or later, but no dice, so went into an endless green screen boot loop.

3) Reinstalled the original 500 GB drive and worked through the guided setup to get the latest and greatest software. Tivo started up and worked fine.

4) Put the 4 TB back in, this time it was recognized and the firmware pushed onto it, eventually leading to guided setup. Powered down the TIVO, then hooked the 4 TB up to my PC and used the MFS Reformatter tool (v 1.0.0.2) to resize to the full 4 TB. Seemed to work successfully and had no errors.

5) Reinstalled the 4 TB in the TIVO, and started guided setup. During the "Getting Setup Info" phase the TIVO errors out during the verifying portion with a "S308" Error Code, "Problem Verifying Info. Your device cannot complete Guided Setup. Please check your cable connection and try again."

6) Called TIVO support, they said the S308 is usually an account/device activation issue, but they don't support internal HD upgrades so I should put the original drive back in (which works).

7) Waited another 10 hours or so, put the 4 TB back in and tried again and still getting the S308.

8) Just for grins, put the 500 GB back in, did a system wipe/reset, ran through Guided setup again and it's now getting the S308...

Anyone have any ideas? I don't think this is some sort of timing issue related to activation because if that were the case I don't think the 500 GB original drive would have been able to complete guided setup. Plus it's been almost a day and a half since I first called TIVO and activated the Roamio.

Replace hard drive on Premiere XL4 with GSOD

$

My TiVo Premiere XL4 (TCD758250) has the infamous GSOD, meaning the harddrive is likely corrupted. I'd like to replace it with a new harddrive, and found numerous instructions online to do so, but they seem to require the original hard drive as part of the process and a linux disk...

Questions:

1) Does WinMFS now work for TiVo Premiere?

2) Do I need the original disk and if so, what are my options? Do I need to purchase a disk image or something?

3) Can I still copy from a GSOD drive? I'm not sure exactly what the state the drive is in, but I'm hesitant to use a disk image of a known bad drive.
