Help - do I have the wrong part?

$

I'm replacing my TIVOHD original hard drive with a WD10EURS 1TB. I'm using a Windows laptop and WinMFS. To connect the drives to the laptop I bought a Sabrent USB to SATA/IDE Hard Drive Adapter. I can't figure out how to attach it to the hard drive, the parts just don't fit. Did I buy the wrong thing? What about the smaller pieces in the box, do use those? You can tell I've never done this before.

I looked through the adapter thread but I can't figure it out, those seems to be for desktops. I was hoping to get this done today...what do I need?

Western Digital Red Drives

Anybody tried one of the WD Red drives on a Tivo? They are made for NAS installs and run at 5400 instead of 7200 which is all good but the transfer rate is 6Gb/sec and I'm not sure if that can be jumpered down to 3Gb/sec.

series 1 hdd errors

I pulled the drive from my Philips hdr112 series 1 TiVo. The unit has lifetime service and the I rigged it wireless with a spare 54g linksys. Now the guy I bought it from upgraded it to a 120 gig WDHDD. About 2 weeks ago it was stuck on boot screen, I tried diagnostics and all the tricks online, nothing worked so I pulled the drive, loaded winmfs and it kept giving me the error 8 super header so I tried fixing the boot, first #1 then #2 and now I'm getting error 7 about partitions or something. I have a new old stock WD drive, same type as what was in the unit except 160 gig and want to use winmfs and put the image I downloaded for this series 1 tivo onto the new drive. It gives an inode error everytime I try to put that image onto the drive, I'm wondering if the drive needs re formatted?

Thanks for all the help guys

Copy to smaller hybrid hard drive?

I've got a TivoHD. I still have the original hard drive somewhere, but it's been upgraded to a 1 TB hard drive.
However, now I want to "downgrade" to my Seagate 750 GB hybrid drive (it's quieter, etc.)

I don't care about losing any saved data (meaning stored DVR'd shows). Can I use WinMFS tools to copy the existing 1 TB "system" stuff to the smaller drive?

If not, I'm assuming I could use the old, original drive, copy and re-expand, although it'll need a bunch of updates after that and possibly a re-pairing of the cable card (I don't remember which cable card was in what device at the time) since Time Warner pairs everything to the specific Tivo, unlike Verizon.

Help with upgrading a failing Tivo Premiere drive

I'm new to this forum but a long-time Tivo owner dating back to the very first Tivo. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable that me can give me some advice...

I have a Tivo Premiere (320GB) with a failing drive (the Tivo started freezing up during playback of recorded videos then skipping ahead). I ran the SMART test and the drive failed. Other than that, it's not had any problems (no rebooting, etc.)

So I bought a WD20EURS 2TB drive to replace it (if it makes a difference, the drive was manufacturered in Thailand in Dec. 2012) and downloaded the Premiere JMFS bootable CD. I plugged both drives into my PC, booted fine from the JMFS CD and started the copy process. Initially it was humming along, but it really bogged down after about 8 hours (maybe earlier). It's been running now for close to 40 hours; most of that time seems to have been spent on "trimming failed blocks" and "splitting failed blocks".

As it stands, it says:
rescued: 320061MB, err size: 11187kB, current rate: 0 B/s
ipos: 148627MB, errors: 1124, average rate: 2260 kB/s
ops: 148627MB, time from last successful read: 2m
splitting failed blocks

It seems to be reducing the err size (originally it was up at about 14000kb), but very slowly--that err size was 12677kB 6 hours ago, so it has dropped by about 1490 kb in in that time. At this rate it'll take another 48 hours to reach zero (in theory, though the average rate is slowing as well). I fear that it's asympotically approaching zero errors and will never actually get there and will take forever trying.

So my questions are:

- Should I interrupt the process now and try expanding/supersizing the new 2TB disk with the data that has been copied over or should I let it continue doing what it's doing? I suppose I have nothing to lose if the new drive doesn't work, but I'd also hate to have it not work and then have to start the process over again from scratch.

- Is there a better way to approach rescuing the failed drive and upgrading to the larger 2TB drive?

At this point, it's not life or death if I can't save the shows that were recorded on the old drive. Though it would be nice if I could save my settings/season passes, etc. it's also not the end of the world if I lose those. From my research, it sounds like there's no way just to make an image/copy the Tivo OS/files and leave behind the recorded shows, so I'm a little at a loss for what to do.

If it makes a difference, I don't have a spare 320GB drive handy for cloning the current drive, but I do have access to a 500GB drive if that helps for an alternate rescue/upgrade process.

Thanks in advance for helping maintain family harmony (my wife and daughter are already up in arms for having to go 40 hours without Tivo!).

Thanks,
Chris

Need Advice on Replacing a Failing Drive without Losing Existing Data

$

I have read many posts about cloning drives, failed or otherwise, to try and preserve the data (aka recordings) on the existing drive. I don't want people to think I am starting a thread without reading existing advice, I have, but the problem I have is that for those who are new to the process involving TiVos (not technically novice, but TiVo novice) that the steps provided lack a certain degree of specificity that would allow for a more reliable and confident attempt.

What is my situation:
  1. I have a Series 2 DVR (Humax T2500)
  2. It has an upgraded drive (larger drive)
  3. The OS and all functions are fine, but the drive hits sectors which result in the system rebooting or stalling (suggests drive is dying)
  4. I have lots of recordings which I don't want to lose and want to carry over to the new drive (of the same size at the moment)

What do I need:
  1. What is the best drive to use as a replacement to reduce decay in the future
  2. Windows or Linux is not a problem, I can use both and I have the technical knowhow (25+ years) which allow me to use any setup without a problem - Linux seems to be preferred
  3. What application will most efficiently and without too much guess work or fuss make a copy of all the OS, data, settings and recordings to a new drive without killing both the source and/or new destination - have considered DD and MFS
  4. Any advice or specific steps would be appreciated, a sort of how-to or relative step-by-step if possible, would be greatly appreciated

I will gladly post my experiences, discoveries and suggestions after completing this to assist others and leave a more beginner friendly DIY in the future, so any help and details will not be a waste and can possibly serve as a manual for others in the future.

Thank you all in advance and I look forward to hearing from all you great people to help me accomplish this and learn something new in the process.

Move Drive From Tivo HD To Tivo Premiere 4?

$

I just ordered a new TiVo Premiere 4 from TiVo. From what I understand the Premiere 4 comes with a 500 gb drive but can only record 75 hours of HD programming. My current TiVo HD has a 500 gb drive (I installed this drive myself to increase recording time from 20 hours to 180) but has room to record @ 180 hours of HD programming. Anyone know why the difference? I ask this question because I just ordered a new Premiere 4 and planned to move the drive from my TiVo HD to the premiere? Also, will I be able to simply swap the TiVo Premiere 4's drive with the one from my TiVo Hd?

Bad sectors causing GSOD...Clone drive or other option?

Have 2 TB upgraded Premiere HD (Samsung F4).

Got the GSOD and tried a few kickstart codes that didn't fix anything (54, 58).

I've put the drive in my computer and run some drive diagnostics...looks like there are bad sectors, but not very many at all (<50 sectors for the entire drive).

I assume they must be in an important spot and thus causing the Tivo to crap out.

Here's my situation/questions:
1) I still have the original 320GB that came with the Tivo, sitting untouched and ready to use to reimage
2) I can get another 2TB drive to use as a clone drive as well.
3) The existing 2TB still functions fine enough to transfer data, so it's not "dead"

- Should I just clone the 2TB drive (thus transferring all good sectors) and let the Tivo try to fix itself? i.e., are the bad sectors to blame for the in-built tivo function's inability to fix itself, or is it likely because the OS is FUBARed?

- If the above wouldn't likely work, I'd like to retain all the shows on the drive. I was wondering if I could image the 320GB onto a new drive, expand/supersize, and then transfer the partitions with the shows from the broken drive to it somehow. Or, conversely, image the 2TB first to the new drive, then take selected OS partitions from the 320GB and plop onto there.

- Since the 320GB is from close to when I got the Tivo 2 years ago, should I at least first put it in the Tivo and allow itself to get the latest/greatest OS updates, THEN use it to image/overwrite?

- The final, least palatable option, would be to just start from scratch with the old 320GB and a new 2TB.

Any advice as to which path to take and/or MFS Tools commands to accomplish this sort of thing would be appreciated.

JMFS Speed

I recently had my first opportunity to use JMFS (on a 4-tuner, 500GB Premiere). Worked perfectly so a big thanks to comer. I used USB adapter cables insted of direct connecting to my MB so I expected it to be relatively slow and it finished 500GB in a bit less than 9 1/2 hours. I use Clonezilla to make a periodic clone of my PC hard drive (500GB) and it takes only about a third of that time. Granted, only one of the two drives is tethered via USB, but I wondered about the huge time difference. I also wondered what JMFS does differently than Clonezilla which uses dd as the underlying copy mechanism. I'm sure something is different otherwise folks would just use the dd on the MFS Tools disk to copy Premeire drives. I understand that JMFS would still be needed to do the Expand and Supersize but those are quick on their own. Will someone please help clear up my ignornace?

Transfer hard drive to new TiVo?

$

I'm upgrading from a Premiere to a Premiere 4. Is it possible to transfer or clone my hard drive and put it in the new TiVo so I don't lose all my recordings and thumbs info? I'm pretty comfortable with cloning/upgrading a hard drive for use in the same TiVo, but I've never needed to transfer one to a new TiVo.

Specifically I have a Premiere with a self-upgraded 1 TB drive, and I'm upgrading to a Premiere 4 along with a new 2 TB drive. So I've got a lot of things going on and not sure what's possible and in what order things need to be done. Any help is appreciated!

Segmentation fault with MFSLive

I encountered this error when trying to swap a 2TB for a 1TB HDD in a "HD model 652":

Quote:

backup[941]: segfault at c ip 0804DC82 sp bfb29508 error 4 in backup[8048000+ c001]

restore failed: -:success

segmentation fault
I'm using MFS V1.4 The drive being imaged is a 2TB taken out of a model 652 (HD). The destination HDD is a 1TB HDD which was never installed. Ythe 2TB will go in another 652 later.
I have done this before (successfully) with the same boot CD. From what I have read on this, it seems it's something that happens inside the O/S, not from a boot CD. Does the source or the destination drive have anything to do with this? Is a 2TB drive a problem here?

Seagate Barracuda any good in TiVo Premiere 4?

Has anyone used this drive in their TiVo Premiere 4?

I was thinking of upgrading the 4-tuner box that I just got with a 2 GB drive. I have a WD Green in one of my other 2-tuner boxes. Wasn't sure if a faster 7200 drive like this one may speed it up a bit. The 4-tuner with it's stock drive does seem a hair slower than either of my 2-tuner boxes (and even my TiVo Mini). Thanks!

Lost Xfinity VOD After Disk Upgrade

$

I just successfully (almost) upgraded my Premiere 4 HD to a 2TB but right now I am back to GSM-11. I just did a connect and am hoping that VOD comes back. Has anyone else had this experience?

Loading now but taking a long time. Is it possible that a service upgrade that was on my original HD didn't transfer to the new disk?

UPDATE: After completing the connect everything is working!

Can one clone all data from Tivo HD with Expander to one disk?

$

I have a Tivo HD (TCD652160) with the original 160 gb internal drive and the Tivo-sanctioned 500 gb expander. It has started to reboot frequently, so I want to put a 1 tb hard drive inside to replace the current hard drives. But, of course, I have tons of programming I want to save, much of it copy-protected. So, the big question, can I "clone," copy, duplicate what I have on the two hard drives onto a single, functional new 1 tb drive? If so, is there any guidance out there? I sure can't find it!

(BTW, I have noted frequent reference here to WinMFS. I can find the website (MFSLive.org), but it looks dusty and abandoned. Can't "register to download" and the last post in their forums appears to be October 14, 2011. Any other source?)

Thanks for any help y'all might provide!

Confused again about hdd upgrade procedures

I have done drive upgraded before...posted here and had much help...so here we go again.

My friends TCD648250B TiVo Series 3 HD, which I bought for him a couple of years ago and resurrected (see thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...60#post8921060 is now dead again and we are thinking hdd issues.

So he bought this hdd: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Here are some questions:

I have images from that I got the last time for the 250GB drive that was stock (they are dropboxed from Unitron (thanks again) ...do I still use those images even if I am using a 1 TB drive?

Which is better/easier the MFSTools or the WinMFS? I forget what the difference is...both image types I have saved.

Do I need to do anything to the drive? Wdiddle or whatever that is called? and how is that done?

Thanks again for your help. I get a bit stressed out doing this and somehow I forget how to do it every 2 years that I have to do it again...its not quite "like riding a bike" for me...'

Can I use WD25EURS (2.5TB) for 2.2 TB storage with Series 3?

$

I currently have Series 3 with dual drives, 750GB internal and 1TB eSata.
I want to consolidate both into a single internal drive of maximum capacity.
I have read that 2.2TB is the largest filesystem possible on Series 3. It seems most people put in a 2TB drive, but you miss out on that last 0.2 TB of potential storage. Can I install a 2.5TB drive (WD25EURS) and get a full 2.2TB available? I'm fine with not accessing the remaining 0.3TB.

Furthermore, is WinMFS the best way to go? It seems to not have been updated in 4 years and the forum postings are also very old. Are there other tools or up to date resources?

I would like to copy everything, including recordings. Worst case I could truncate partitions and lose recordings, but I'd rather keep them if possible. I don't care how long it takes to copy. I don't want to lose season passes or cable-card configuration.

Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks!

Is there a way to run wdidle either in windows or on a drive that is connected with a USB adapter?

Also, is it better to disable it all together or to set it at 300 seconds?

These drives wil be going into TCD240 and TCD649 TiVos.
